J.P. Morgan Securities ends 2020 atop bank M&A deal value league table

J.P. Morgan Securities LLC blew past Piper Sandler & Co. to reach the top of S&P Global Market Intelligence's bank M&A league table ranked by deal value through the fourth quarter of 2020.


J.P. Morgan worked on three deals valued at $12.34 billion in all of 2020. The investment bank advised on one deal in the 2020 fourth quarter: PNC Financial Services Group Inc.'s pending $11.6 billion acquisition of BBVA USA Bancshares Inc. In addition to J.P. Morgan Securities PLC, which advised the seller, the deal featured other familiar names in advisory roles. BofA Securities Inc., Citigroup Global Markets Inc., Evercore Inc. and PNC Capital Markets LLC all advised PNC Financial.

By comparison, Piper Sandler worked on 19 deals with an aggregate size of $7.96 billion, holding on to its top spot on the number of deals league table but falling to seventh in the deal value league table. The total deal value does not reflect deals for which financial terms were not disclosed.


Rounding out the top three in the deal value league table were Evercore and Keefe Bruyette & Woods Inc. Evercore worked on three deals through the end of 2020 valued at $12.16 billion, and KBW advised on 10 deals valued at $12.10 billion. Huntington Bancshares Inc.'s pending acquisition of TCF Financial Corp. was among KBW's fourth-quarter 2020 assignments.


In the league table ranked by number of deals, Olsen Palmer LLC was second with 11 deals valued at $74.0 million as of Dec. 31, 2020, and KBW rounded out the top three.
